Stop. Shoes off. Lie down. Land.

Rave or sofa. On a Saturday night that’s usually the choice.

Helsinki lost its chill-out room. For one night, the Gallery is one.

Ambient Birds Nest comes out of Helsinki’s club nights and turns the other way: off the dance floor, onto the floor. At the end of Slush week, a hundred and fifty people lie down in the dark round a nest of branches, and listen. Nothing to buy. Nowhere to be.

When the cold came, the old Finns said, the birds flew to Lintukoto: a warm place at the edge of the world, where the sky bends down to touch the earth.

They found the way along Linnunrata, the birds’ path. Finns still call the Milky Way by that name.

This is a small Lintukoto in Vallila. The nest is where you land.

  3. Then tea

    Tea at low tables, not a bar.

  4. Through the opening

    The nest in the middle: a glowing egg in a ring of branches. Music from all four corners, played low.

  5. Find a bed

    Beds round it, feet to the nest. Dark sensory rooms at the back, and a small infrared sauna for three.

  6. Lie down

    The nest at your feet, paper lanterns overhead.

    Dark outside since four. In here, blue light, and the nest just lit.

  2. 18:30 · First set

    Warm up.

    Deep red from the floor. The nest glows like a coal.

  3. 20:00 · The long, slow set

    Drift.

    Teal and violet washes. The lanterns turn violet.

  4. 21:30 · Antti Hevosmaa, live trumpet

    Listen.

    Near dark. One silver beam onto the nest, and a trumpet.

  5. 22:30 · ONCHI, last set

    Go home and sleep.

    Indigo. The nest a last dim red, until two.
